She Said: Getting ready for skiing…. the bumps

It’s time for my nightly ritual walking our five month old blond lab Boomer (Baby Boomer).  But tonight is different.  There’s a chill in the air and a light drizzle is falling.  As we head out I’m wearing a hooded jacket and mittens which brings one thought to mind – ski weather is just around the corner!  And I think how woefully unprepared I am for the thing I love most – skiing the bumps.  So, I kick my walk into high gear and start doing lunges to Fleetwood Mac as Boomer trots ahead.  After a block or two of those, I walk backwards for a few blocks which really targets different muscles.  All the while I’m thinking it’s a good thing I walk at night so the neighbors don’t think I’ve gone off the deep end!

When our kids grew up and moved out they left behind the trampoline.  My husband, who’d disapproved of the tramp from the get-go (it’s too dangerous) wanted to get rid of it.  I vetoed the idea, knowing that we’d need it in the future and sure enough . . . voila, another great “get-the-legs-ready-for-skiing” device.  Keep in mind that having just the right song on the iPod is key here.  I draw an imaginary line down the middle of the tramp and then, with knees slightly bent, legs together and my upper body as stationary as possible, I jump to the left and then to the right of the line until the song ends.  I start with very short songs and by Thanksgiving, I’m usually up to an average 3 minute song!

The other thing I’m doing to increase endurance and agility is soccer . . . with Boomer.   We play with a life-size plastic pumpkin which is great because Boomer can grab ahold of the stem to bring the pumpkin back into play from the sidelines or from under the trampoline. He’s an extremely adept dribbler; he puts the pumpkin between his front legs and takes it down the yard at full speed with no intention of giving it up to me.  I really have to charge around to have any hope of getting a few kicks in!  Not sure how long the plastic pumpkin will last.  Next season we might have to splurge for a real soccer ball.
